Yarn Candy Monday: Hand Dyed Merino Roving... Jobo-Colors-Style!

1. November 2010 09:36 by Jobo | 4 Comments

I've been working on a couple of commissioned projects this month... trying to get things finished for the Holidays... and this is one of them.  The plan is to make a pair of Lined mittens out of handspun yarn for a young woman who wears a lot of blue jeans and a black winter coat.

Dyed Fiber

This is some super soft Merino Top (one of my favorites to work with, and also to dye with)  that I hand painted with some Jacquard Acid Dyes.  Basically I soaked the natural colored wool and then splashed it sparsely with shades of Black, Gunmetal Grey and bits of Teal Blue, then wrapped in Plastic Wrap and Nuked in the Microwave until set.  The places where the Black blended into the cream fiber created some nice brownish areas and the grays and blues are fading nicely from medium to light shades.

It might look in the photos like there is a lot of brown, but it's actually not as visible as all of that... the Grays, Blues and Blacks dominate quite nicely.  These little "Nests" of predrafted fiber will become a nice bouncy, round, worsted weight 3-ply yarn to even out the colors and blend the shades together further.  The light pearly blues and pale grays that appear sporadically in the mix remind me of the shimmering shades in Mother of Pearl... I think these mittens will require buttons of the mother-of-pearl variety to be incorporated into the design :)

Maybe next week's Yarn Candy will be the finished yarn?  One can only hope...

Yarn Candy Monday: Specialty Designer Blends from Belfast Mini Mills

4. October 2010 08:58 by Jobo | 0 Comments

exotic belfast 2

This little duo is an "Exotic Blend"... so is soft and bouncy and beautiful... but I'm not exactly sure what's in it!  The ladies at Belfast said that they keep every scrap of exotic fiber, and when there is enough, they do a special run of this blend.  There might be Angora, mohair, silk, quiviut, or anything in there! I doubt there's much angora, because there isn't much of that feather light halo, but only time will tell.

Either way... it still counts as Yarn Candy I think!?  I bought it with the intention of making myself some fingerless mitts and a cowl for my FREEZING cold office... Patterns still to be chosen and evaluated.

Happy Monday!

Della Socks... a satisfying adventure!

27. August 2010 07:21 by Jobo | 0 Comments

della socks closeup After the last pair of plain black ribbed socks I felt like I needed some Pizazz!  Some Adventure!  Some colour at least! lol

This pattern (Della Socks by Holly Terrell) has really hit the spot as far as interest and simplicity goes!

  • -The leg of the sock is in a zig-zaggy pattern
  • -There is a neat little band of garter stitch like a little ankle-bracelet
  • -The Heel is in a basic slipped stitch, cushy stitch
  • -The foot some fun Cable-like Ropes running from ankle to toes

Since the initial cast on, I feel quite pleased and entertained by this sock!  I love that the pattern has changes and twists and turns along the way.  By the way things have been progressing, it looks like sock number one could be completed today... and as you can see it fits me perfectly!  The design progresses from the chevrons to the garter to the ropes with ease, and makes a great looking transition!  I also love the coloring of the yarn... just enough flashing to be interesting, without being overkill.
