Spinning Angora... in Russian!

26. August 2010 08:52 by Jobo | 1 Comments

angorarussian1 I've been making more progress on my Angora spinning project... using my new Gripping Yarn Russian Spindle (which is fantastic by the way)

I had a sample of 0.5 ounces of nice, soft, oatmeal colored angora... which has now been turned into a small ball of fine singles.  I wound them off onto a cardboard tube for safe keeping, while I try and decide what material it should be plied with to make the best possible yarn.  I definitely want to avoid simply plying the single back onto itself, just for the simple fact that I want to preserve the length... so I will be able to make something more substantial from it in the end.  I have a small sample also of some super soft fine cashmere fiber, that I want to try on the Russian sometime, so maybe I will use that...

I might be addicted to this new-to-me spinning method!

Attractive features:

  • - portable spinning... fits snug-as-a-bug into my purse for travel spinning
  • - possible to spin while sitting in an enclosed area (no need to have room to "dangle" like a drop spindle)
  • - ability to spin superfine yarns!  (finer than I ever imagined I could)
  • - a little fiber goes a long way... double your enjoyment of expensive exotic fibers!

Now... on to the cashmere!  and I want Cake!  Chocolate Cake!  and a Pony!  ok... just the cake then!

(I guess I don't ask for much, right?  lol)

Yarn Candy Monday is Baaaack! Barking Dog Yarns

9. August 2010 12:29 by Jobo | 2 Comments

barking dog card I was lucky enough to win a pattern and yarn draw a few weeks ago from Hunter Hammersen over at Violently Domestic... which included a fantastic free skein of 100% Merino Squishable goodness from Barking Dog Yarns.

Well my Package arrived last week, and I am finally getting around to showing you the photographs :)

When I found out I had won a skein, I thought that this would be a perfect time to order another skein too (as a test, you know, erm, to see what the rest of her stuff was like!  as if I need a reason to buy more yarn at this point)  So I also ordered a skein of her Cashmere / Merino Blend.  I love the colors!  It was really hard to decide!

Below:  Sirius 100% Fine Merino Superwash in "Sky Pirate"

The first thing I noticed when I picked up the envelope/baggie the yarns came in was how light and soft the yarn was.  In true Jobo Fashion, I could not wait the 30 second drive from the mailbox to the house to tear into the package.  I knew what it was, and I wanted it open NOW.  This yarn did not disappoint!  The pinks and purples are so soft and girly - the cashmere is so soft and lovely.  No doubt about it, this skein MUST become a shawl or scarf of some kind.  It needs to be close to the skin.  The vibrant blues and purples of "Sky Pirate" are difficult to photograph and even lovelier in person.  They remind me of the Caribbean ocean with it's teal and blue waters, with some indigo and violet shadows.  I will have to make the most special pair of socks yet to do it justice!

Suzan's customer service is fast fast fast, and completely top notch!  You will love her yarns... Pop over and take a Peek :)

I won I won! and I got an email from Hunter Hammersen

23. July 2010 09:00 by Jobo | 2 Comments

So I'm just working away... and BAM!  I get an email from Hunter Hammersen pop up in my email notification...  and I think to myself:  "that's the woman who designs those cool socks!"   <<insert squeal of delight>>

I've won a contest from the blog Violently Domestic - Hunter's newest sock pattern AND a skein of Yarn from Barking Dog Yarns!

I have been watching Hunter's patterns online for a while now... hoping that someday I'd get to make one especially admiring "popped" and "nugatory."  I've been keeping my eye on yarns and waiting until the right one came along to match one of the patterns.

Well I guess it's going to be quite easy to decide now!
