Now that the Holidays are over? Yarn Candy Mondays are Baaaaaacccck!

This little puffy beauty is a gift from another local spinner that I was lucky enough to meet up this weekend with for my first real "Spin-in" - BrighidGreen - Thank you, Thank you!  Apparently this wool was purchased for it's super soft cloudy look and feel, and is presumed to be Polworth, maybe.  Since she had a nice big bag of it, she gave me a couple of nice sized handfuls to play with :)  The fiber itself is really light powder blue and feels like it could float away it is so poofy.  Since I don't have very much of it, I'm thinking maybe I'll try and spin it up and then ply it with something else so it will go farther? maybe with a thin bamboo single or something?  I think the shine of the bamboo will just pop next to the icy bluish blend :)

Yarn Candy Monday: Alpacas of Newfoundland!

14. December 2009 11:05 by Jobo | 0 Comments

We went on a fantastic trip to Newfoundland for a Family Wedding back in October (09) and I got to go and visit an alpaca farm while we were there:  Alpacas of Newfoundland!alpacas of nfld yarn

The farm itself is located right alongside the ocean, on a little peninsula with a fantastic view… we arrived in the off season, so thankfully the owner arrived home at just the right time so we could get a little tour and check out the gift shop too.  The animals were very inquisitive and came right over to check us out as soon as we got out of the truck.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to bring my camera, so I don’t have any live pictures… but believe me, each one had their own unique personality… I couldn’t get over the big brown expressive eyes :)

I purchased 2 x 50 g balls of their signature 100% Alpaca Yarn (Approximately sport weight) in a natural white color to try and make some mittens with.  This yarn was made in Peru and is super soft.  When knit up it will have a gentle soft halo (I got to see some mittens made from this in the gift shop)

We also managed to try on many Alpaca-made items (hats, mitts) and see lots of other things you can make from Alpaca Fiber:  Pelt rugs (which would be heaven on bare toes!) and alpaca duvets.  All in all, an alpaca-filled day!  (and the store sold Scotsburn ice cream… mmm)

Here is a little buddy that came home with me to remember the visit…  I call Him “Al”

Yarn Candy Monday: New Knit Pics Sock Yarn

23. November 2009 09:00 by Jobo | 0 Comments

A non-descript, boring brown package arrived at my door the other day? To the non-knitter, I'm sure it appeared as any other? But I knew it contained this:  My Knit Picks Order!  (yay for large piles of beautiful Yarn!)

This particular beauty is Stroll Hand Painted Sock Yarn in colorway "Lullaby"  which contains 75% Merino Wool and 25% Nylon for durability.  Each Skein has lots of yardage at 462 yards per 100g - and a steal of a deal at 9.99 per hank.  I *might* have purchased a few *Ahem* ok several of the available colorways.  I wound this into a ball on Saturday to feed the need for long-car-drive-knitting.  So far so good, it is really nice to work with!

I am going to try and post pretty yarn pics once a week for a while? doesn't everyone need a little Monday Yarn pick me up?
