Yarn Candy Monday: Handspun Merino laceweight

27. September 2010 11:02 by Jobo | 2 Comments

Leftover from a dyeing experiment... I had a small amount of rich brown and charcoal merino top sitting around the studio.  In a fit of "startitis" I decided I needed to spin something new... but something that wouldn't take forever to finish.  I have enough epic projects going on these days it seems.

It's hard to describe the color exactly of the finished yarn... it kind of reminds me of the brownish black color of peat moss, which is why I'm calling it my "Peat Bog" yarn.

I spun it as fine as I could manage on my Ashford Traveler... using a new-to-me technique of wrapping the fine single around one of the hooks an extra time to slow the uptake onto the bobbin.  I was surprised that even that one wrap made a big difference in the fineness of the single I could make.  I know that some spinners have added extra hooks to the back of the flyer so they can cross lace a fine single... and I can totally see how useful this would be.  I guess I will have to keep my eyes open for some small hooks I can install.  I was hesitant to just add the regular Ashford replacement ones in case I might split the flyer wood, but maybe a teeny weeny hook or two would be ok.  I can definitely see the appeal to this kind of spinning.

The final yardage count is around 200 yards, and the yarn falls somewhere around light fingering.  The yarn has been whispering to me that it wants to be a scarflette or small shawl, but I haven't completely made up my mind on this.  I have an idea for a bit of a franken-shawl... perhaps a few patterns morphed into one?  All I know is I want it to be lacy, and it will likely start out as a stockinette triangle something like "Ishbel" (Ysolda Teague) or "Little Shells" (Holly Griffin-Weidner)

Yarn Candy Monday: Dream in Color Smooshy....

20. September 2010 08:36 by Jobo | 0 Comments

I have wanted to try this yarn for a while now... and I finally gave in!  Here it is in all it's glory... and this stuff is definitely as "Smooshy" as the title says :)  I can see why everyone makes such a fuss over this yarn, the colors are so vivid they just seem to jump off of the skein.  Although with the shipping this is a little pricey, I can see why people choose to use it for projects like sweaters and shawls... I can't imagine making something from this and then covering it up completely.  I'm sure it will make great socks, but that mossy green is so rich and true that I think it will need to be the centerpiece of an outfit all on it's own.   Top:  Shiny Moss.  Bottom: Ruby River

Yarn Candy Monday: Fiber Optic!

13. September 2010 08:33 by Jobo | 2 Comments

This little "Black Coffee" beauty is rich and dark as your favorite cuppa!  Kimber at FiberOptic has fantastic rovings and spinning fibers... but this is the first chance I've had to try out her yarns.  I love the browns in this yarn, but also how soft and lovely the texture is.  The yarn is tightly spun but still has a nice hand - I bet it will make a fantastic shawl or socks!  If I can ever decide...
