WIP Wednesday: Sailing along with Salor

 salor first

I'm making pretty good progress on my Salor Socks... even thought he photos show a half completed sock, I have finished the whole first one and have the second well underway.  I'm enjoying the way that the cable columns are working up, and especially in love with the heel - Those horseshoe cables are so geometric!  The regular twists create such a concise rope feeling... I think I'd like to do some socks with columns of just these the whole way up the toe and from the heel straight on up too!

The gold yarn is bright and cheery, and also easy to see in the evening hours (which is good, because I hear other people in the KAL are finding their darker colors a little harder to see... ahem*Kim*cough)  I've mostly just been picking these up for a row or two at a time this week, with all of the running around, and being exhausted, I just don't have the brain power.

I hear JB is trucking along on her Salors as well... which are in a lovely green shade!

New Knit Along - from Silk Road Socks!

1. February 2011 13:41 by Jobo | 2 Comments

I love love LOVE Hunter Hammersen's sock designs... simply love them all.  So of course, I got my name on the list for Hunter's new book as soon as I knew it was in the works!  If you want to go and learn more about the book - go visit her site:  Violently Domestic or the Book specific site:  Silk Road Socks!

Polaropposites (Kimmy!) and I have decided that our next knit-along project should be socks... and since we both loved just about every design in Hunter's book, it made sense that we should do one of them.  I didn't realize that Hunter was doing her own KAL through Ravelry for the book at the time we were considering our own... so maybe I can join into the official KAL for next month or something.

salor socks from Silk Road SocksWe will be starting tomorrow evening... with SALOR!

If you'd like to join us, please let me know and we can all encourage each other along through the project!

I love the wavy columns of cables here, which run all the way down the heel of the sock!  I really like the contrasting cuff too.  I'm sure this with be an interesting knit all the way through.

The great terracotta / paprika color used for the book's model socks is so warm and rich... and I don't even generally like orange?!  I don't have anything similar in my sock arsenal at home though, so I have to come up with something else and I'm having a hard time.

I thought maybe I could get some input from the peanut gallery?  Here are the two yarns I'm stuck on deciding between:

My first option is a custom dyed skein of All For Love of Yarn - Lublu Sock, 80% Superwash Merino / 20% Nylon... This one is a lovely Blue/green/grey mélange reminiscent of a stormy ocean.  As always, blue is hard to photograph, and I tried a couple of different Photoshop edits, but I think this is getting closer to the real color.

I love the tight bouncy feel of the yarn... and I've been saving it for an extra special project :)  I thought I might do a Brandywine Shawl with it originally, but I think it would suit these socks well too with the subtle color variations, I definitely don't want to use anything that will pool here.

My other option is some Knitpicks Stroll Tonal in Golden Glow.  The bright sunny yellow will brighten any day I'm sure... but I thought the warm honey gold glow might suit this pattern and really highlight the cable columns.  Yellow is not a color that I tend to wear often in my wardrobe, but I enjoy it.  I think Yellow socks would be fun, and bring some sunshine to my dull drab February.

What's your Pick?  Leave me a comment and tell me which you prefer!

Sadly I did not photograph every pair of socks from 2010.... I think there are 3 more "faceless" pairs that have either been given away before photographing, or who are waiting to be blocked and given away as holiday gifts.  I think my addiction is under control... don't you think?  If I knit 18+ pairs of socks a year... that justifies having 18+ skeins in my stash right?  lol.
